Ancient green porphyry

Is a andesitic porhyrite with plagioclase phenocrysts.

Used during the Greek-Roman empire.

Ornamental stone characterized by a generally dark green background (matrix), which can however vary in different shades of green and reach brown or purple. It contains spots (crystals) having a green or white color, sometimes red or yellow, which have a polygonal shape and dimensions ranging from millimeters to centimeters.

Some denominations refer to the appearance of the rock: Sasso Smeraldino or Pietra Smeraldina; Serpentine; Piganusio marble ( of the color of the rue ), in Greek called piganon ). Many denominations refer to the places of origin: Lapis lacedemonius or Lacedemonio (from the region of the same name); Spartan stone (from the city of Sparta); Krokeatis lithos (from the ancient city of Krokeai) or Croceate (from the ancient city of Crocee); Taygetas (from the Taygetos mountains); Tenaria (from the Tenaro promontory). Finally, other denominations derive from both attributes: Ancient green porphyry of Laconia (from the region of the same name); Green porphyry from Greece.
